Adulting Class
There are many options for learning more about how to be an adult.

Adulting is pretty universal. We all know what it means, but do we really know how to do it? While many of us appear to know what we are doing, often times the truth is we have no idea! Here are a few of the most talked about topics where adulting is concerned.

Budgeting

Budgeting is not new by any stretch of the imagination. It does, however, make its rounds in popularity. Budgeting is crucial for financial stability and security. If you don’t have a budget you are much more likely to live outside of your means.

But budgeting is hard! It’s difficult to know how to create a budget that fits your needs. And then once you have a budget, the self control necessary to maintain the budget is tremendous! But budgeting will help you save money and put you in a place that is better prepared for the future.

Meal Planning

Meal Plan
Meal planning keeps you organized.

Something that has always been around but has recently made its way into the spotlight is meal planning. Meal planning is just mapping out the foods you are going to make and eat for the coming week(s). This is helpful for several reasons. One of these is saving money. When you meal plan, you take your previously established budget and choose meals that you can safely afford.

Another good reason to meal plan is that you will waste less food. It’s always disgusting to find that Tupperware container in the back of your fridge that’s full of moldy something or other that you ate a few months ago. When you plan your meals (factoring in leftovers for lunches and even breakfasts) you know when you are going to eat your food. And that should help you eliminate the moldy container guessing game we all love to play so much.

Adulting Classes

A class on adulting.
Classes where individuals learn adult skills.

Yes, it’s true. Adulting classes are a real thing. In Oregon, Rachel Weinstein started a school specifically for classes on adulting. These classes include budgeting and meal planning, but they also teach communication skills, cooking, sewing on a button, and more.

Schools used to teach stuff like that in classes such as home ec, however courses like that aren’t really being taught anymore. Kids are in more and more extracurricular activities and it seems as though parents are pressuring for better academic performance. And even though neither of those are bad things, it appears that these “adulting” skills are falling through the cracks. And while skills such as those can be learned through other platforms like YouTube, adulting classes may be an effective way to learn what you need to know in order to adult successfully.

Now What?

There is so much to learn about how to adult

Maybe you already budget and meal plan, or maybe you don’t have the smallest idea of where to start with it. Either way, there is always more for us to learn. Knowing what’s new helps us see what lots of people are thinking about, but it doesn’t stop us from exploring our options. So get out there and continue your journey in figuring out what exactly this adulting stuff really is.
